Everyone Optimizes the First Five Minutes. Almost Nobody Builds Day 45.

The industry is obsessed with speed-to-lead, and rightly so. I just wrote about the first week: 59.30% of recorded closes happen within 7 days. But here is the number nobody talks about: 28.35% of recorded closes happened after day 44, through day 180.

More than one in four recorded sales came from leads that most agencies had already written off. Deleted. Archived. "Dead." Those policies got written anyway, by whoever was still following up.

Same dataset as the speed piece: leads delivered January 1 through March 31, 2026, tracked across a uniform 180-day follow-up window. Shares of recorded closes, not close rates. Full methodology on the lead generation statistics page.

Why Agents Quit Too Early

It is not laziness. The system is rigged against the long game:

  • Comp plans reward speed. Agents get paid for what closes this month, so they work what is hot and ignore what is old.
  • CRMs bury old leads. Day-60 leads sit three screens deep, under a pile of fresh ones. Out of sight, out of mind, out of the numbers.
  • Nobody owns nurture. Marketing thinks sales is working them. Sales thinks marketing is nurturing them. Nobody is.
  • "Aged" sounds like "bad." So agents treat 90-day-old leads like expired milk instead of what they are: people who raised their hand once and never got a proper follow-up.

What a Day-44-Plus System Looks Like

You do not need fancy. You need consistent. Here is the skeleton:

  1. Monthly check-in touches. One SMS or email a month, every month. Short, human, useful. Market updates, rate changes, a simple "still thinking about coverage?"
  2. Life-event triggers. Birthdays, policy anniversaries, enrollment windows. These are natural reasons to call that do not feel like pestering.
  3. Quarterly reactivation campaigns. Every 90 days, run your cold list through a dedicated push: new angle, new offer, small ask. Measure it separately so you can see what the long game is actually worth.
  4. Keep the human in it. Automation keeps the lights on, but a real call from a real agent every few months is what closes day-120 leads. The lead raised their hand once. Treat them like a person, not a record.

The bar is embarrassingly low here. Most of your competitors stop at day 14. If you are still following up at day 90, you are not competing with anyone.

This Is Why Aged Leads Work

Once you see the 28.35% figure, the aged-lead market makes complete sense. Those leads are not worse, they are just older, and age only matters if nobody works them. Agents who buy aged leads cheap and run a real nurture system are harvesting the exact closes everyone else abandoned.

A vendor sells you leads and disappears. A marketing partner builds the machine with you and shows you the math. The machine includes the long game, not just the first week. I wrote the full playbook for working older leads on the GOAT Leads blog: How to Work Aged Insurance Leads. Same principle, applied from the buyer's side.

The Bottom Line

Speed wins the first week. Stamina wins the next five months. 28.35% of recorded closes land after day 44, which means more than a quarter of your potential revenue is sitting in the part of your CRM nobody opens. Build the long game: monthly touches, life-event triggers, quarterly reactivation. Simple, consistent, human.

And run both systems together. The 7-day blitz catches the fast closes. The long nurture catches the 28.35%. Read the speed piece here, then get a free funnel teardown and I will map both systems for your agency. No pitch.
